Breaking Free From The Darkness

Addiction is a condition or fact of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.

It can present itself in many forms ranging from a dependency, habit, problem, devotion, obsession, infatuation or even enslavement.

While drugs are one form, there are many different types, some of which even considered socially acceptable like working too much.

I believe that all of humanity has a struggle with their own issues, which can bring a darkness over our lives.

Next time you see someone in the midst of their struggles, a hug, smile or encouraging word can become a beacon of light.

The RoOt Causes Of Addiction

It's normal to think that the reasons for addiction are simple and that there is an easy solution.

Interestingly, while older studies suggest that the sources are external, new research shows that's true only when we are living in isolation.

It turns out that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, rather it's connection.

Watch this 6 min video that illustrates this concept.

The struggle for all of us is that increasingly our focus on making real and lasting relationships is declining and has been for some time.

Encouraging Real Connections

Living in the "connected" world isn't the same thing as making a real connection.

Think about it, when we say "It's not what you know, but you know that counts."

Somehow, in today's fast-paced world, who you know has been replaced with who you meet.

Knowing someone starts by learning things about them, who they are, what they are interested in and may be troubling them.

Caring begins when you have a relationship, investing yourself in their life and choosing to love them even when they don't deserve it.

Final Words of Hope

Family members who live with an addict can think that that they love the addiction more than them. That's not true. It certainly can hurt at times like that's true because of disappointments, anger, and grief.

Bottom line, in desperate times, people don't need isolation to solve their problems, they need the love and the support of their family and community.
